The athletics action was at its best when close to 10,000 people descended on Melbourne Olympic Park for the first meet of the 2008 World Athletics Tour. The 2007-08 domestic season culminated in Brisbane, with the annual national titles doubling as the selection trials for the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Australian athletes were required to bring their best and many did. No-one was better than Jarrod Bannister in the javelin, who threw the spear 89.02m to smash the national record and secure his place on the team.
