The Nokia Thames Swim is part of the Nokia Outdoor Series, a selection of events that celebrate sport in the great outdoors, so you and your friends can get active in some of the UK’s most beautiful places. Nokia have teamed up with open water swimmer Keri-Anne Payne (Olympic silver medallist in Beijing) to provide you with expert tips on training for the Nokia Thames Swim from now until race day.

“With less than 8 weeks to go you really should be working up to swimming a full 2 miles in distance. In a 25m pool this is approximately 128 lengths. But, don’t be too worried about the numbers, just take your training one step at a time and build up your distance each time you go swimming. Ideally, by now you should have at least done a swimming session in open water. With no walls to push off from, it is very different to pool swimming and you need to get used to the outdoor atmosphere before race day. Good luck!”

Training/Preparation
Starting an open water triathlon with confidence is key for every competitor and our aim is to provide you with all the advice and support to help you achieve this so we will be hosting an Open Water Swim Seminar at Dorney Lake with 1½ hr sessions (45 minutes theoretical and 45 minutes swimming practical) with our Official Training Partner, The Tri Life. The training will be aimed at novices as well as more experienced swimmers looking to improve their open water swimming technique early in the season. We will split you into groups according to your ability and the session will provide you with practical and theoretical advice by a number of triathlon experts, lead by Olympic and World Champion triathlon coach Bill Black. Experts will provide you with advice on all aspects of the swim section including:
• Goggles – correct fitting and top tips whilst racing • Wetsuit – correct fitting and how to get it on and off quickly • Open water swimming techniques • Race top tips – for group starts, course sighting etc
The training you will receive is first class and is rated very highly by past participants. To find out more about the Open Water Swim Seminar or to enter click here.
Wetsuits will be optional however they do in fact help with buoyancy and warmth so we recommend that you wear one. Wetsuit hire is available through Tri and Run.

Official Charity/Fundraising
We're working in partnership with WaterAid, our Official Charity for the Nokia Thames Swim. Globally 884 million people live without safe drinking water and 2.5 billion do not have adequate sanitation. WaterAid is an international charity that fights to change this and enable the world’s poorest people to gain access to safe water and sanitation. Together with improved hygiene, these basic human rights underpin health, education and livelihoods, forming the first essential step in overcoming poverty. We work with local partners, who understand local issues, and provide them with the skills and support to help communities set up and manage practical and sustainable projects that meet their real needs.
If you would like to raise sponsorship for WaterAid then you can create your own sponsorship page by going to www.justgiving.com/wateraid. You can also contact Jill or Kat for a fundraising pack by calling 020 7793 2232 or emailing events@wateraid.org. Just £15 can enable one person to access safe water, improved hygiene and sanitation so however much you can raise will make a huge difference.
We'll be in touch again soon, with more details, tips and information, but until then, we hope you enjoy getting ready for the Nokia Thames Swim 2010.
Good luck and we look forward to seeing you in August!
With best wishes
